No More Room in Hell 2 – Update 1.2: "The Last Stand"

The fog has lifted, but the dead haven't gone anywhere. We're thrilled to roll out Update 1.2: "The Last Stand", our largest content and stability patch to date. This update focuses on three core pillars: expanding the world of No More Room in Hell 2 with meaningful new content, overhauling the combat loop to be both more punishing and more rewarding, and tackling the long-standing technical issues that have plagued our survivors since the early days of Early Access.

This patch represents a major milestone—not just in terms of raw content, but as a statement of our commitment to feedback. The community has been loud, clear, and overwhelmingly constructive, and this update reflects dozens of community-requested changes, quality-of-life improvements, and a full pass on the game's most complained-about performance bottlenecks. Whether you're a grizzled NCU veteran or a fresh civilian looking for a light, there is something for everyone in "The Last Stand."

Without further ado, here is the full breakdown of Update 1.2.

New Content & Features

New Map: "Hollow Creek Volunteer Fire Station"

We're introducing a map that has been in the community's imagination since launch: Hollow Creek Volunteer Fire Station. This isn't just a new firefight arena; it's a survival sandbox wrapped in rural Americana. Set in an isolated Virginia township, the station serves as an anchor for a new three-stage objective mode: you must restore power to the station's siren, fortify the bay doors, and finally defend the central common room against a sustained siege.

Why this map matters: the fire station is designed around verticality and bottleneck defense. The second-floor dormitory offers a long sightline down the main highway approach, while the garage bay is a deathtrap if you get overrun. You'll need to coordinate roles: someone on the roof spotting, a pair at the barricaded single-lane entrance, and a dedicated looter running the adjacent supply shed. The station also introduces closable garage doors—a dynamic world-prop feature that can be used as a temporary shield, though you'll need to manage the power drain carefully.

New Enemy: "The Belcher"

A new threat has crawled out of the fog. The Belcher is a bloated, gas-masked infested that serves as the game's first true "controller" enemy. It does not chase you; instead, it anchors itself in a location and emits a toxic expulsion wave every 45 seconds, gradually covering a wide radius in a corrosive bile. Any player caught in the bile suffers Cellular Decay, a new debuff that ticks health down and reduces stamina regeneration by 30%.

The Belcher fundamentally alters the tempo of objective missions. It forces players to split their attention: you can't turtle up in a corner forever if a Belcher waddles in. It has a visible audio cue (a deep, wheezing inhale) about 2.5 seconds before it spews, giving skilled players a window to break line of sight. We've designed it to be a push mechanic—it clears you out of defensive positions, making you vulnerable to the horde you're trying to avoid.

Tips: A well-placed melee heavy attack (which we've buffed this patch) can interrupt the Belcher's charge-up. Always keep a grenade or Molotov if you know one is in the area—it can be annihilated with a single precise explosive before it sets up, but only if you're fast.

New Weapons: The "Wiley" Frontier Pair

Gunsmithing doesn't stop at the police station. We've added two weapons that fill previously painful gaps in our loadout roster:

  • The Wiley Lever-Action .357 Magnum – This is your mid-range precision rifle that actually rewards confidence. Holding 8 rounds in the tube, it fires slower than the existing hunting rifle but has the lowest damage falloff of any non-sniper in the game. You can one-shot basic zeds to the head out to 80 meters. Its real utility, however, is the heavy stagger effect—a successful chest piece will knock a runner off its feet, buying you precious seconds in a horde swipe.

  • The Wiley Coach Gun (12 Gauge Double Barrel) – A classic side-by-side shotgun for the "John Wick of Appalachia" fantasy. It fires both shells simultaneously with the trigger, dealing devastating close-range damage that can bisect multiple targets. It has a slower reload than the pump-action shotgun, but you can cancel the reload early after a single shell, making it a lightning-fast clutch tool when you're getting mauled while fumbling for the last round.

New System: "Fatigue & Adrenaline" Rework (Survivor Layers)

While not a new feature per se, we are implementing a two-layer stamina system that replaces the binary "you're tired/you're fine" log of previous patches. On top of your normal stamina bar, you now have an Adrenaline Meter that fills from combat actions (landing headshots, taking damage, reviving allies). When your stamina empties, Adrenaline kicks in, allowing you to sprint and swing for another 3-4 seconds at normal cost. After the Adrenaline bar drains, you get a five-second "wobble" period where you cannot sprint at all.

This is a deceptively simple change that dramatically increases the skill ceiling. Superb players can loop between covering fire and Adrenaline bursts to chain longer escapes, but never to run indefinitely. It also makes the Runner class (see Balance below) more interesting—you're not just a zoomer anymore; you're a risk-reward economy manager.

Gameplay Balance Changes

Zombie Behavior & AI

  • Spawn Director Overhaul: The director system now uses a "pressure algorithm" that is significantly less random. On early map rotations, spawns are scaled to squad size properly, fixing the infamous "lone wolf gets mobbed by 14 zeds before the first objective" issue. In later stages and during sieges, spawn rates have been increased by 12% to compensate for the stronger player arsenal.

  • Headshot Stun Duration Reduced: We are removing the "bullet sponge" complaint without making headshots weak. We have reduced the stun-lock duration on a basic zed headshot from 1.2 seconds to 0.7 seconds. This means you must now secure the kill quickly; you no longer have the luxury of leisurely lining up a second shot on the same target. It speeds up the flow of combat and punishes check-swinging.

  • Runner Leap Cooldown: The Runner's leaping attack had a nearly invisible cooldown, often allowing rapid double-pounces. We've corrected the animation lock. A Runner will now do a brief "wind-up" dance before a second leap is possible, giving players a clear 0.9-second window to shove it away. This is a significant survivability buff for choke-point defense.

  • Zombie Perception (Greater Zeds) – The big armored brutes now take a reduced but still present damage reduction from headshots. They used to be near-immune to 9mm rounds; now, 9mm pistols can eventually crack their skull plates (10% reduction instead of 40%). But be careful—their audio detection radius has increased by 25%, so careful sniper play is less safe.

Weapons & Combat Balance

  • Melee Heavy Attack Stamina Drain: Reduced from 35% to 25% of the full bar. Conversely, the damage on heavy melee has been raised by 15%. We want melee to be a viable primary strategy when ammo is scarce in the early game, but the risk of getting swarmed is now better rewarded.

  • Shotgun Range/Damage Falloff: The sawed-off shotgun's effective range has been halved, with a steeper falloff curve. This is a direct nerf to "sniping" with the sawed-off, which was a broken playstyle at launch. The pump-action shotgun retains its longer barrel but now reloads 10% slower (to compensate for the damage buff seen below).

  • Pump-Action Shotgun Damage Buff: Base damage per pellet increased by 8%. It can now reliably two-shot a Runner at point-blank range. Yes, the meta is shifting.

  • Ammo Economy Changes: We've rebalanced the loot table across all maps. Specifically:

  • .357 Magnum ammo is more common than before (though still rare), but you'll find it in loose bundles rather than full boxes in the first 10 minutes.

  • 9mm ammo spawns are reduced by 8% overall. This turns the first 15 minutes into tense resource management. You'll be relying on melee and .22 LR sidearms far more frequently early on.

  • Molotov cockboxes now spawn exactly one guaranteed per large structure map. No more farm rushes—we know you know about those.

  • Grenade Physics Fuse: Frag grenades have an unreliable fuse—they can "cook" for 1.2 to 2.2 seconds (randomized). This rarely impacts ability but makes cocky "airburst" grenade plays more dangerous to pull off near cover. Countdown beep volume has been increased by 20% so you have a chance to warn allies.

Classes & Survival Mechanics

  • Runner Class Nerf: Sprint-to-ads transition is now slower (0.8 seconds instead of 0.4). Everyone else was literally unable to track Runners. The class remains fast, but you no longer have a laser-perfect hip-fire immunity during adjacency. Instead, Runners gain a new passive: "Second Wind"—Adrenaline refills 15% faster when taking damage. This pushes Runners toward high-risk, high-reward brawling instead of speed.

  • Engineer Class Buff: The repair tool now repairs barricades 20% faster. But more importantly, barricades built by an Engineer now have an additional 50% health. In objective mode, this is literally the difference between surviving a horde and watching your fort crumble. There is now a compelling reason to have exactly one Engineer per squad.

  • Scavenger's "Satchel" Perk: The Scavenger's starting inventory slots have been increased from 4 to 5, but they only spawn with one melee weapon to compensate. Machete spawns in their hands are now guaranteed, making them the clear "frontline looter" class.

  • Infection Timer Nerf: The time-to-turn after being bitten has been reduced from 4 minutes to 2 minutes and 30 seconds. We've increased the audible infection heartbeat cue significantly, and your character now coughs louder. This is a terrifying but fair change—antibiotics are now critical to find fast.

  • Healing Changes: Bandages now heal 45 HP over 8 seconds (up from 30 over 6). Medkits heal less upfront (100 → 80) but apply a 10% damage reduction buff for 30 seconds. This shifts the medic role from "instant tank heals" to a pre-engagement buff style.

  • Flashlight Durability: Flashlights now drain batteries 15% faster when sprinting (to simulate physical shock). We know this is annoying, but head-mounted cams remain efficient, and it forces you to use your ears in night missions. Battery spawns have been increased by exactly 10% to compensate.

Bug Fixes

Gameplay & Mission Fixes

  • Fixed the "Out of Bounds" desync on Sewer Map: Players would randomly be teleported to spawn after falling through a specific joint between the pipe tunnel and the maintenance door. This was a level geometry issue that has been fully repaired.
  • Objective Progression Stuck on "Clear the Building": We fixed an issue where the game would not register the final zombie kill if a Belcher (pre-update placeholder zombie) died simultaneously via environmental explosion and melee on the same tick.
  • Crucial Fix: Revive Glitch. Reviving a downed player while another player is sprinting into them would teleport the reviver to the downed player's crosshair location, causing severe clipping and falling out of world. This is gone.
  • Player collision on barricaded doors: You can no longer "ghost" through a barricade while pressing against another teammate in a narrow doorway. This was a 2-year-old bug; we are happy to see it gone.
  • Melee hits no longer phase through zombie torsos at high framerates (above 144 FPS). The melee hitbox was unscaled per-second, causing 2/3 swings not to register for 165Hz players.

UI & Inventory

  • Hotbar Issue: The "duplicate item glitch" where inventory slots would show two of the same weapon (but only one deployable) has been fixed. Tooltips now properly display their ammo count.
  • Map screen now shows objective distances in meters while aiming with your GPS device (a quality of life change).
  • Fixed localized text overflow on the Spanish and German versions for long weapon names.
  • The health bar correctly displays "Decay" status, instead of showing as a permanent poison debuff.
  • "Holding a Molotov" no longer hides your equipped weapon's crosshair.

Audio & Visual

  • Audio occlusion should now correctly muffle zombie growls when they're in a separate room but a door is open. We fixed the "silent super-hearing" bug.
  • Fixed a bug where the Belcher's charging sound would loop infinitely even after death.
  • Resolved the "cop car siren" infinite audio glitch on the Fire Station map.
  • Updated LOD for distant objects to reduce the "pop-in" of vehicles on the highway map.

Multiplayer & Networking

  • Packet loss mitigation added: Client-side variable interpolation buffer now adapts to packet loss above 15%. You'll feel less rubber-banding in congested lobbies.
  • Fixed a desync that caused a player's health to show 100% locally but be 10% on the server (the classic "ghost shot").
  • Server-side validation for explosive damage now matches the client, so you'll no longer get killed by a grenade that appeared behind you on your screen by 2 meters.
  • Host migration fix (PC-only): The host leaving during a siege no longer fails the mission; the session will pause for 10 seconds and transfer host to the player with the most stable ping.
  • Crossplay is not affected by this patch, but we updated the matchmaking filter to prioritize same-region co-op sessions.

Performance Enhancements

Engine & Rendering

  • Shader Cache Update: We've implemented a pre-caching system for DirectX 12, reducing hitching in the first 5 minutes of a match from an average of 12 stutters down to 1-2.
  • Texture Streaming Overhaul: We've reworked texture mipmap streaming. In dense urban areas, you'll notice significantly reduced texture pop-in for walls and floors during the first 30 seconds. Average VRAM usage is down by ~850MB on Ultra settings.
  • Threaded Physics: Zombie ragdoll processing is now multi-threaded. The "clothesline that drops all zombies to 10 FPS when a pileup happens" is substantially improved. On a 6-core CPU, we're seeing up to 23% higher minimum FPS when 30+ zombies are on screen.
  • Async NAVmesh Baking: Pathfinding on a new map is now baked in the background, removing the "loading freeze" that occurred when entering a new district.

Specific Platform Optimizations

  • NVIDIA Reflex Low Latency toggle added for competitive players (reduces render latency but no visual quality impact).
  • AMD FSR 3.0 Frame Generation support has been added. It's a beta option, but early reports show +45% FPS on Radeon 7000 series when enabled.
  • Steam Deck: A custom "Steam Deck Medium" preset has been added, which reduces shadow quality and crowd density to hold a stable 40 FPS in all current zones. We've also fixed the issue where the on-screen keyboard would not appear for chat on Steam Deck's gamepad-only mode.
  • Memory Leak Fix: After 3+ consecutive matches, memory is now correctly freed after each match, reducing the "post-3rd-game stutter" that was caused by zombie AI. This is the big one—you can now run a 6-map marathon without a restart.

Known Issues

We are tracking a few launch blockers that we hope to fix in a hotfix by the end of the week:

  • Belcher interaction with barricades – sometimes the Belcher will "spit" through a fully reinforced wall without breaking it. It does not deal damage to your HP, but the visual alert can trick you into losing position.
  • Fire Station generator sound loop – An intermittent audio glitch where the backup generator hum persists after being powered off.
  • "Cracked Skull" achievement does not track Heavy Melee kills through glass window pane (the kill registers but doesn't increment).
  • DirectX 12 + NVIDIA 30-series (only when VRS is enabled): A rare light flicker in the Fire Station map's garage area.

We will ship these out in a rapid-response hotfix within the next 72 hours. Please keep them coming in the Bug Report forums.

Final Notes & Community Corner

"The Last Stand" would not be possible without the incredible feedback from our Early Access community. We've read everything—from the rage threads about the sawed-off, to the deeply considered essays on melee balance. This update is a direct evolution of your input.

We are especially excited about the Adrenaline Meter; we believe this single mechanic will reshape how groups traverse the map. Watching the community figure out the new optimal routes and stamina rotation patterns is going to be a joy. As always, the development team will be dropping into random public lobbies over the next two weeks to test the new map and run the siege with you.

On the roadmap horizon, we are hard at work on Chapter 2 of the Campaign, a new Survival Mode that mixes the map pool with dynamic weather, and an update to the private-hosting system that will allow dedicated servers. But first, we need you to get out there and use that Coach Gun. Remember: the room is not safe. It never was.
